Marsha Jensen. Fiber Art
Some people might label me a fiber artist, others a craftsperson. I consider myself a weaver and maker of things. I derive great pleasure in making something from raw materials, whether it be cloth or a container. In recent years, my weaving has focused primarily on basketry. I used to throw pots, now I weave them. Perhaps it is the idea of creating aesthetically pleasing functional objects and art pieces that makes sense to me. What I know for certain is that there is an inner urge, if not need, to make things.
Fiber arts appeal to me because of the techniques involved and the tactile quality of the materials. It is truly a pleasurable experience to touch, hold and manipulate the materials and watch as a shape or texture or pattern emerges. In the workshops that I have taught, I have observed this same reaction by the students, once a basic understanding of what the materials will allow is reached. I hope people enjoy viewing my work. For me, the joy is in the process of weaving, or just simply making things.
